Pick the spot: selection tools

Choose exactly what to change with curved, straight, rectangle and smarter selection modes, then use it for removing or planting areas.

Pick the spot is the first sub-tab of the Erase & fill tool (key W). It lets you mark an area of the photo, then use it for removal, a new bed, a patio and more.

Steps

  1. Open Erase & fill, then Pick the spot.
  2. Choose a mode. Three are shown up front:
    – Curved edges: click around the shape; the line bends smoothly.
    – Straight edges: click corners; lines are straight.
    – Rectangle: drag a box.
  3. Close the shape. A highlight shows what is selected, and a status line reads “Highlighted N% of the photo”. Straight edges: Shift keeps 45-degree angles. Enter or a double-click finishes a shape; Esc cancels.
  4. For more control, open More ways to select: Object, Same color, Snap to edge, Hug the edge, Oval and Touch-up brush. Each mode adds its own sliders, such as Color match, Brush size, Edge search width, a Preview before applying box, and Soften new selections.
  5. Fix the edges (see below), then choose what to do with it.
  6. You can also right-click or long-press the photo for a menu of things that make sense at that spot.

Refine the edge

  • Type a name in the select-by-name box (hint: shrubs, weeds, lawn, mulch, patio) and press Find. You must be signed in, and the online finder must be switched on; otherwise you get a message telling you to outline it instead.
  • Buttons: All, Invert, Deselect.
  • Tools under Refine: Grow, Shrink, Expand 4px, Contract 4px, Smooth, Feather 6px, Fill holes, Edit points, Similar, touching, Similar, everywhere. A check box, “Feather follows edges”, softens foliage and keeps hard edges crisp.
  • Edit points: drag a white dot, tap a teal + to add a dot, tap a dot and press Remove point, then Looks right.
  • Refine edge automatically snaps the line to the real edge.
  • Uncertain edges can show in red.

Use the selection as…

This menu turns the selection into: Lawn area, Planting bed, Patio, Outline zone, Measure it, Remove it, Edit with AI, Copy cut-out, or Fill with a material.

Save and view

  • Save a selection and later Load it, add (+) or subtract (-) it, or delete it.
  • View modes: Tint, Mask, Only, Outside, Ants. You can change the highlight colour and strength.
  • Keys while selecting: Ctrl+A all, Ctrl+Shift+I invert, Ctrl+D deselect, 1-9 switch mode (in the order Curved, Straight, Rectangle, Object, Same color, Snap to edge, Hug the edge, Oval, Touch-up brush), [ and ] brush size, Delete or Backspace removes the highlighted area (the same as Remove it).

Tips

  • Zoom in before outlining. Small errors show at the edge.
  • Use Same color for a flat lawn; use Snap to edge near fences.
  • Smart, Paint it and Outline it modes exist in code but are hidden in this version.
  • Save a selection you will reuse, such as “front lawn” or “old shrubs”.

If something goes wrong

  • The highlight spills over: choose Take away and click the spill, or Shrink.
  • Holes inside: Fill holes.
  • Nothing happens on Delete: make sure a selection exists. The panel says “Nothing highlighted yet” when there is none.
  • Find does nothing useful: sign in, or outline it by hand.
