Troubleshooting: blank studio, camera not working, caching and minify

Fix a studio that stays blank, a camera that will not open, and caching or minify plugins that break the designer.

Use this when the designer does not open, shows a blank area, or cannot use the camera.

A. The studio is blank or the button does nothing

What the page needs

The designer loads one script, assets/js/app.js, as a JavaScript module, and a small settings block. Both are added by the [visionscaper] shortcode.

Steps

  1. Open the page in the WordPress editor and check it contains [visionscaper] (designer) or [visionscaper mode="hub"] (Contractor Hub). A link to #visionscaper, or any element with the attribute data-visionscaper-open, opens the app on a page that has the shortcode.
  2. Look for a caching or minify plugin. Its job is to combine and shrink JavaScript. The plugin’s own readme says: exclude the plugin’s assets/js/*.js files from JavaScript combining and minification, because they are ES modules.
  3. In the same plugin, clear the cache, then reload the page with the cache bypassed (Ctrl+Shift+R or ⌘+Shift+R).
  4. Try the page in a private window with extensions off. Ad blockers and privacy extensions can block scripts.
  5. Open your browser’s developer tools (Console tab) and look for red errors. Send them to whoever manages your site.
  6. Check your theme or page builder is not stripping <script type="module"> tags.

Note: after an update, script addresses carry the plugin version, so a refreshed page loads new files. A stale page cache can still serve an old page that points at old files. Clear the page cache once after updating.

B. Designs will not save

You may see: “This browser is blocking storage, so designs can’t be saved (private mode?).” Open the site in a normal window, allow site data, or sign in so designs save online.

C. The camera will not open

What happens

The live camera needs the page to load over https and needs the browser’s permission. If the camera is unavailable or permission is refused, VisionScaper falls back to the phone’s photo picker, so you can still pick a photo.

Steps

  1. Confirm the address starts with https.
  2. When the browser asks, allow the camera. If you refused earlier, open the site’s permissions in the browser and allow Camera.
  3. Close other apps that may be using the camera.
  4. If it still will not open, use the photo picker instead and take the photo with the phone’s normal camera app.
  5. If the picture will not open, use a JPG. On iPhone: Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible.
  6. On iPhone the tilt sensor asks for permission. Allowing it sets the eye-level line from how you held the phone. If you refuse, the line is a guess you can drag.
  7. Make sure nothing covers the lens, and take the photo with the camera rather than saving a screenshot or a picture from a message.

D. Bird’s-eye view finds nothing

You will see “There are no aerial photos for this address. Take or upload a photo instead.” Try the street address again with the town and state, or use a photo.

Tips

  • Exclude /wp-json/dreamscaper/* from page caching too. See [troubleshooting-rest-errors-and-stripe-webhooks].
  • Keep a note of which cache plugin you use so you can reapply the exclusions after switching hosts.

If something goes wrong

  • Still blank after all steps: disable the caching plugin for a moment. If the studio opens, the exclusions are the problem.
  • Only the Contractor Hub is blank: check the page uses mode="hub" and that your account is approved as a contractor.
