Clear an area (Blank canvas) and remove weeds

Replace weeds, old plants and clutter in a bed or lawn with clean mulch, lawn or soil, or pick just the weeds to remove.

Clear an area turns a messy bed or lawn into a clean blank area you can design on. Weeds, old plants and clutter all go. It runs in your browser: the readme says no cloud call and no cost.

Where to find it

Erase & fill (key W) opens a guided screen the first time in a session. Otherwise use the buttons at the top of the panel: ๐Ÿงน Clear an area (weeds, plants, clutter), ๐ŸŒณ Remove a plant and ๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ Remove something else. The Remove it tab also has Clear weeds from a bed.

Steps: clear an area

  1. On “What would you like to do?” tap Clear an area.
  2. “Which part do you want to clear?” Choose Find the bed for me (best for a mulch bed), Curved edges, Straight edges or Rectangle. Include the weeds. Leave out anything you want to keep.
  3. If it found the area, “Is this the area you want cleared?” shows it in blue. Drag a white dot or tap a “+” to fix it, then Yes, clear it. You can also choose Just part of it โ€” I’ll outline it, It missed some โ€” add more or It has too much โ€” leave a part out.
  4. “What should this area become?” Pick Mulch bed, Lawn or Soil. One is marked My best guess. A raised bed full of weeds can look like a lawn, so it may guess wrong. You can change it afterward.
  5. “Here it is. Slide to compare.” Drag the slider between Before and After.
  6. Tap Looks good โ€” keep it, or Not quite.

Everything inside the outline is replaced with clean mulch copied from the same photo, or a library mulch or lawn when the photo has too little clean ground. Plants you placed in the Designer are protected.

If “Not quite”

Pick what looks wrong:

  • Some weeds or green are still there (then you add more to the area).
  • It’s the wrong kind of ground (should be lawn, mulch or soil).
  • The color or look isn’t right.
  • It cleared something that should stay (then you leave a part out).
  • The edges are wrong, so you draw the area.

“What should this area be?” shows looks to try: Match my photo (mulch only) or library looks such as dark brown, black, red, cedar or cypress mulch; lawn looks; soil looks (topsoil, soil, compost, bare dirt). No redrawing is needed.

Steps: find and remove only the weeds in a bed

Use this when the bed is mostly fine and you want to take out the weed patches.

  1. Open Erase & fill, then the Remove it tab. Find Clear weeds from a bed.
  2. Tap the mulch or soil of the bed so VisionScaper knows where to look.
  3. Choose how thorough to be: Only obvious, Most weeds or Everything green.
  4. Press Find weeds. The message says how many weed patches it found (“Found 4 weed patches. Check them, then press Remove it. Paint off anything that is a real plant.”).
  5. Fix the highlight with Fix the selection with a brush: Paint on adds, Paint off takes away.
  6. Press Remove it. Plants you added in the Designer are never touched.

Messages you may see: “First tap the mulch or soil of the bed so I know where to look.” and “No weeds found in that bed. Try “Everything green”, or tap a different part of the bed.”

Tips

  • The result is one Undo step.
  • Other ways to handle a spot: Mark it “to be cleared” (draws a red box on the photo) or Ask a landscaper to clear it.

If something goes wrong

  • No edge found: “I couldn’t find the edge of that bed by myself.” Outline it yourself.
  • Result looks smudged: choose Not quite and a different look.
