Plant age and the See it grow slider

Choose how big a plant is when planted, then drag See it grow or press Play to watch the yard mature year by year.

The readme calls this the Time machine. On screen it is the See it grow slider under the picture. It uses each plant’s real growth data, so you can see whether a shrub will crowd a window or path.

Steps: set the size when planted

  1. Select a plant in the picture.
  2. In the side panel find Size when planted.
  3. Drag the slider. The label shows a nursery size and height, such as “5-gallon · 3 ft tall”. Trees use labels like Seedling, 1-gallon, 5-gallon, 6-ft tree, 10-ft tree and 12-ft+ tree. Shrubs and perennials use Seedling through 7-gallon+.
  4. You can also type a Height in feet. This sets how tall it is at the year shown on the slider, and it keeps growing the way that plant really grows afterward.

Steps: watch it grow

  1. Drag See it grow to the right. The label reads “Today” at 0 and then “In 5 yrs (2031)” style text.
  2. Press the Play button to animate. It advances about 3 years each second and stops at the end. Press it again to stop. Play starts over from year 0 if the slider is already at the end.
  3. Press Fully grown to jump to the year when everything you placed is nearly full size.
  4. Watch the growth chart in the side panel: the green dot moves along the height curve.

The slider is always at least 30 years long, and gets longer (up to 60) when you place slow growers. Tick marks show 0, 1, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 years.

How sizes work

  • Width and height follow the plant’s own curve. Perennials fill in over seasons. Annuals reach their size within one season.
  • A plant cannot be bigger than its mature size or smaller than a seedling.
  • When you resize a plant it sets a real height in feet, not a hidden multiplier. Older designs with hidden multipliers are converted when opened.

Tips

  • Plant at the size you would actually buy, then slide time forward to check spacing at maturity.
  • Use Test growth in the Scale tab to check the scale with two sample shrubs.
  • Years-from-now and season are saved with the design.

If something goes wrong

  • “This plant usually tops out at [n] ft”: it is already at its maximum size.
  • “It can’t be smaller than a seedling that year”: move the Time slider back.
  • Play does nothing: it may already be running; the button shows pause.
