Outline modes and fine-tuning edges
Use Curved edges, Straight edges or Rectangle to outline an area, then drag white dots, add teal plus dots, remove points and undo.
One outlining tool is shared by the Add an area wizard, Clear an area, Draw beds & patios and Erase & fill (since version 2.50.0). Learn it once and it works everywhere.
The three modes
| Mode | How |
|---|---|
| 〰️ Curved edges | Tap around the area one point at a time. The outline curves smoothly. |
| 📐 Straight edges | Tap each corner. Straight lines in between. |
| ▭ Rectangle | Press on one corner, drag to the opposite corner and let go. |
You can switch mode with the buttons at the top of the picker.
Steps: outline an area
- Tap the photo to place the first point (a green dot labeled 1).
- Keep tapping around the area. Points are numbered. The hint tells you how many more you need (“Good. Keep tapping around the area (2 more to go).”).
- When you are back at the start, tap the green ✓ dot, or press Finish outline. The button reads “Place at least 3 points” until you have three.
- The area is shaded.
Steps: fine-tune after you finish
- Drag a white dot to move that part of the edge.
- Tap a teal “+” between two dots to add a new dot, then drag it where you want the edge.
- Remove a point: tap a dot, then press ✕ Remove point (you need at least 3 dots left). With a finished shape selected in the Move tool, you can also double-click a dot to remove it.
- ↶ Undo steps back. The picker keeps about 60 steps.
- ⟲ Start over clears the outline.
- Press the confirm button (“Continue”, “Looks right”, “Yes, that’s the area” or “Save the new shape”, depending on where you are).
After you finish a bed or patio in the Draw tool, the same dots are available: a section called Fine-tune what you just drew has Remove point, Undo and Done. Later, select the shape with the Move tool to get the dots back.
Changing mode on a finished outline just changes how the edges look (curved or straight).
Tips
- On curved edges, place more points on tight bends and fewer on long gentle lines.
- On photos, outline the part on the ground. The shape follows the perspective.
- Hold Shift when using the Erase & fill Straight edges mode to keep 45 degree angles.
If something goes wrong
- Press and drag does nothing in Rectangle mode: press on one corner, drag across, then let go. “Press on one corner and drag across to the opposite corner, then let go.”
- A dot cannot be removed: an outline needs at least 3 dots.
- Dots are too small to hit on a phone: zoom the picture first.
