Payment methods your customers can use

Card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, bank transfer (ACH), cash and check, and instant payouts to your debit card.

Which ways a customer can pay depends on your Stripe connection and on what the site owner switched on.

The methods

Method How it works Speed
Card, Apple Pay, Google Pay The customer pays on Stripe’s secure page. Money reaches your bank in about 2 business days.
Bank account (ACH) The customer pays from a bank account. Stripe tries an instant bank login first and falls back to micro-deposits. Clears in about 4 business days.
Cash, check, other You record it yourself. See “Record payments, void invoices and refunds”. As soon as you record it.
In person by card Uses the phone app and a card reader or Tap to Pay. See “Card reader and Tap to Pay”. Same as card.
Instant Payout You move your available balance to a debit card. About 30 minutes.

What the customer sees

On an open invoice, a button 💳 Pay $X by card appears. If the site owner allows bank payments, a second button 🏦 Pay by bank account appears with a note that it takes about 4 business days.

Bank payments in detail

  1. The customer starts a bank payment. The invoice shows Bank payment clearing.
  2. You get a message that a bank payment started.
  3. When it clears, the invoice becomes Paid and you get an alert. The customer gets a receipt.
  4. If it fails, the invoice opens again. You and the customer are told, and the customer can pay by card or use another bank account.

While a bank payment is clearing, the customer cannot start a second payment, and you cannot record one by hand.

Instant Payouts

The site owner has to switch Instant Payouts on (it is off by default).

  1. Open Settings → Get paid online. You must be connected and ready.
  2. The ⚡ Instant Payout card shows “Available instantly”.
  3. Enter an Amount (at least $1). A line tells you the fee and what you receive.
  4. Tap ⚡ Pay out instantly.

Stripe needs a debit card on your Stripe account. You can make up to 10 instant payouts a day. If the payout fails, the fee is returned.

Tips

  • Offer ACH on big jobs. The fee is lower than for cards, but it takes longer.
  • Tell customers who pay by bank that it can take several days.

If something goes wrong

  • Only the card button shows. The site owner has not ticked the ACH option.
  • No Instant Payout card. Instant Payouts are off, or you are not ready on Stripe.
  • “Nothing is available for an instant payout right now.” Payments become available shortly after they are made.
