Add your own item from a photo

Photograph a plant or feature, cut it out, and save it to My Library so you can place it in any design.

Missing something in the library? Make your own item from a photo. It lands in My Library, the last category in the library list. You can use it in any design on this device.

Before you start

  • Photograph the whole item from the ground to the top. Shoot from the side at about waist height, not from above.
  • A plain background (sky, lawn, a wall) gives the cleanest cut-out.
  • For plants, photograph them in bloom if you can. The window says flowers are hidden out of season.
  • The optional Find it by name (free) helper in the cut-out step is only offered when you pull an item out of an existing photo, and it needs the online helper to be switched on (not verified for every setup).

Steps

  1. Open the Add tool (key P), then Plants & things. Press Add my own item. (The home screen also has an Add My Own Item tile.)
  2. A small window offers Photograph it and Cut it out of a photo. Pick one.
  3. Step 1 of 3, Photo: Take a photo or Choose a photo. For an existing picture you can also use From my designs.
  4. Step 2 of 3, Cut out: use the four tools. Keep brushes over parts that got cut off. Remove brushes over background still showing. Box drags a box tightly around the thing. Ground drags to where it meets the ground; everything below is removed. Tick Preview on checkerboard to check your work, and use the brush size slider.
  5. Step 3 of 3, Details: choose what kind of thing it is, then search the library or type a name in “What is it?”. Pick a match and your photo grows, blooms and changes colour using that plant’s data. Type a name under Name in your library.
  6. If you linked a plant, keep Grow it over time like a real (plant name) ticked. Untick it and you set How tall is it? yourself.
  7. Press Save to My Library. Place it like any other item.

Tips

  • Zoom and take your time with Keep and Remove. Clean edges look best.
  • Link to a library plant whenever you can. An item you give a fixed height does not change size with See it grow.
  • Tick “The photo shows flowers” if it does, so the flowers are hidden out of season.
  • To change an item later, open it from My Library. You can Redo cut-out (if the original photo was kept), Save changes, or Delete. Deleting also removes copies placed in your designs.
  • Site owners see Download for website on an item. It saves the cut-out so you can upload it in WordPress under Settings, VisionScaper, Library photos (see Library packs).
  • My Library items are kept in your browser storage on this device (IndexedDB). A storage size limit and a storage meter in this window are not verified in code.

If something goes wrong

  • “That photo couldn’t be opened. Try a JPG or PNG.” Use another picture.
  • Parts of the background stay: paint more with Remove.
  • Part of the item vanished: paint Keep over it.
  • “Give it a name so you can find it later.” Type a name before saving.
  • “Couldn’t save — your browser storage may be full.” Delete items you no longer use.
  • Find it by name finds nothing: drag a Box around it instead.
