Paint mulch, stone, lawn and pavers on the ground

Brush a material onto the photo, with brush size, softness, opacity, perspective, 3D depth and photo-shadow sliders.

The brush paints a ground material straight onto the photo. Textures shrink into the distance and pick up real shadows from your photo.

Where to find it

Add → Mulch, stone & lawn (key B). A button at the top, “Add a bed, lawn, patio or path”, opens the guided Add an area wizard.

Steps

  1. Under Brush, choose a mode: Paint, Undo paint (rubs out paint you added) or Show original (brushes the original photo back, which also reverses erasing and AI changes in just that spot).
  2. Set Brush size with the slider, or use the Smaller and Bigger buttons.
  3. Choose Sharp edge or Blended edge. For a blended edge a Softness slider appears.
  4. Set Opacity if you want to see the photo through the paint.
  5. Pick a material in the Material list. Search it (“Search [n] materials”), speak into the microphone, or tap a group chip: Mulch, Stone & Gravel, Soil & Sand, Lawn & Groundcover, Pavers, Natural Stone, Tile & Marble, Wood & Decking, Decking & Surfaces.
  6. Drag across the ground in the photo.

The three realism sliders

Slider What it does Default
Photo shadows on painted ground How much of the photo’s own shade the new material picks up. Set 0% for an even look, raise it to match the photo 30%
3D depth of painted ground Reads each material’s light and dark areas as relief: shaded pits and lit edges 60%
Perspective of painted ground How strongly the texture shrinks into the distance. Turn it down if a material looks stretched 100% when the scale is verified (phone tilt or a measured object), 80% otherwise

The sun button in the scene bar flips the lighting direction of the relief.

Tips

  • Paint with a big brush first, then use a small blended edge to tidy the border.
  • For clean shapes, use Draw beds, patios and edging instead of freehand painting.
  • Painted areas are listed in Layers → Ground shapes and can be hidden or removed.
  • After an Erase & fill or AI change, brush Show original to bring back the true photo in one place.

If something goes wrong

  • Paint looks streaky or collapses toward the horizon: lower the Perspective slider. Version 2.51.0 fixed streaking on photos that are not the built-in samples.
  • Stone looks flat: raise the 3D depth slider, or flip the sun.
  • Material looks too dark: lower Photo shadows.
  • The brush paints outside the lawn: use Undo paint, or press Ctrl+Z.
