Place a plant or feature in your yard

Pick a plant from the library and tap the photo to drop it at its real size, then place several at once.

Placing is a two-tap action: choose an item, then tap where it should go.

Before you start

  • Set the scale first so plants are the right size. See Set the scale for me.
  • Open Add → Plants & things (key P).

Steps

  1. Tap a card in the library. A message says “Tap the photo to place [name].” On a computer it adds “Hold Shift to place several.”
  2. The panel shows “Placing: [name] — tap the photo” with a Cancel link.
  3. Tap the photo where the plant’s base should sit on the ground.
  4. The plant appears at its usual nursery size and is selected. The side panel switches to that plant’s controls, and the selection bar floats over it.
  5. To place several in a row, hold Shift while tapping on a computer. The tool stays in placing mode.
  6. Press Esc or Cancel to stop placing.

How big will it be?

A plant is drawn at the size it would be when bought and planted, called its Size when planted, shown with a nursery label such as Seedling, 1-gallon, 5-gallon, or a tree height. It grows from there as you slide See it grow. It is also drawn smaller farther away, following the perspective of your photo.

Placing near eye level

The blue eye-level line is the horizon. A spot at or above it will look tiny, because it is far away. A tip appears if you drag a plant there. If the yard really does go back that far, keep going.

Placing features

Features such as boulders, benches, fire pits and lighting keep their real size. A fire pit and lighting glow when you turn on night lighting. See Seasons, day and night.

Place a plant from its fact sheet

On the fact sheet, tap Place in my yard.

Tips

  • Place bigger plants farther back and smaller ones toward the front.
  • Use Duplicate to plant a group at the mature spread of that plant. See Move, resize, turn, flip and copy.

If something goes wrong

  • Nothing happens when you tap the photo: you may be in a different tool. Tap the card again, or press P.
  • The plant is tiny or huge: check the scale step.
  • The plant is not in the list any more: items whose My Library asset was deleted are dropped from designs.
