Get your SendGrid API key

Create a SendGrid API key, authenticate your domain, and select SendGrid in VisionScaper Messaging.

SendGrid is another email service you can choose in Settings → VisionScaper Messaging.

Before you start

  • A SendGrid account.
  • Access to your domain’s DNS.

Steps

  1. In the SendGrid console go to Settings > API Keys.
  2. Click Create API Key.
  3. Type a name in API Key Name, for example “VisionScaper website”.
  4. Choose a permission level. SendGrid’s page lists Full Access, Custom Access, Billing Access and Email Address Validation Access. Pick Custom Access and allow only mail sending. The exact “Mail Send” label was not shown on the page I read, so look for it in the list. VisionScaper calls only the mail-send endpoint.
  5. Click Create & View and copy the key. SendGrid shows it only once.
  6. Authenticate your domain. Go to Settings > Sender Authentication and click Get Started in the Domain Authentication section. Choose Authenticate Your Domain, select your DNS host, enter the root domain only, click Next, add the DNS records (or use Connect if your host supports it), then click Verify. SendGrid says DNS changes can take up to 48 hours.
  7. In WordPress open Settings → VisionScaper Messaging, section Email.
  8. In Email service, choose SendGrid.
  9. Paste the key into SendGrid key.
  10. Optionally fill SendGrid webhook secret (see the next article).
  11. Click Save.
  12. In Settings → VisionScaper Marketing, set Send from address on the authenticated domain.

Notes on what VisionScaper sends

  • Plain text and HTML, a From name, reply-to, and unsubscribe headers.
  • Open tracking and click tracking are turned off in the request.

Tips

  • SendGrid also offers single sender verification as an alternative to domain authentication. That page’s steps were not available.
  • If your SendGrid plan has limits, they are SendGrid’s. Prices are not repeated here.

If something goes wrong

  • 403 or “does not contain a valid address”. The sender address is not authenticated.
  • Key rejected. It lacks mail permission, or was copied with spaces.
  • Mail in spam. Finish DKIM and add a DMARC record.
