Landscape plans: the 10-step measured plan wizard

Build a measured 2D landscape plan from aerial imagery, a tape check and site photos, ready to turn into a quote.

A plan is a measured 2D drawing of a yard with plants, beds and hardscape, ready to quote. The screen says it takes about 15 minutes in the office and 10 on site. Open Design Studio, then Landscape plans (subtitle “Step-by-step measured 2D plans”). You can also start from a customer’s property card with Create a landscape plan.

The wizard saves as you go, on this device and on the property, so a plan started in the office can be finished on site.

The steps

# Step What you do
1 Customer & property Pick or add the customer and the full property address
2 What to plan Pick areas: front yard, back yard, left side yard, right side yard. Planting beds and plants are always included
3 Bird’s-eye base map Load the aerial for the address and drag the map so the house is in the middle
4 Trace the property Tap corners, or let AI try to find outlines (if AI is on); drag any dot that is off
5 Check the scale Check against one tape measurement
6 Site photos Take guided photos
7 Site details Zone, sun, deer, drainage, irrigation, HOA, what to keep
8 Style Pick a style card
9 Designs Optional designs per area
10 Generate & review Check the summary and generate the plan

Tips for the hard steps

Scale (step 5). The wizard says to find something flat you can measure on site. The driveway width at the street is ideal. A survey from the closing papers or the town hall gives the most accurate property lines. If you skip the tape check, the plan is marked less accurate.

Site details (step 7). You set the USDA zone (the screen points to planthardiness.ars.usda.gov if you are unsure) and the sun for each area. Plant choices follow the zone, sun and deer.

Photos (step 6). Daylight, sun behind you or to the side. Hold the phone sideways, at chest height, level. Move cars and bins out of the shot. If you cannot reach a spot, tap Can’t get this one and say why. Photo checks flag problems for you.

Style (step 8). Each card shows how many library plants fit this site. The star suggestion fits the site and the maintenance the customer wants.

Before generating (step 10). Anything marked ✖ must be fixed first. Tap it to go there. Remember to call 811 before digging. The summary reminds you.

After the plan is generated

You review it in the editor. Drag anything to adjust. Generate again replaces changes you made in the editor, and asks first. Then, on the quote, tap Use the Landscape plan’s quantities. See the design-to-quote article. The screen also says “Build the quote straight from the plan.”

Steps: start a plan

  1. Open Landscape plans and tap Start your first plan (or Re-run wizard for a property that has one).
  2. Search or add the customer, pick the property.
  3. Go step by step. Required parts are marked •. Continue or Next part is blocked until they are done, with a reason.
  4. At step 10 tap Generate the plan.

If something goes wrong

  • “Pick the property address.” It needs house number, town and state.
  • “AI couldn’t find it — trace it by tapping the corners.” Trace by hand.
  • Plan looks the wrong size. Recheck the scale. Re-draw the tape line.
  • Aerial is missing. The Bird’s-eye step offers other ways to measure, or skip and measure on site.
