Get your Twilio Account SID and Auth Token

Find the Twilio Account SID and Auth Token and paste them into VisionScaper's text-message settings.

VisionScaper sends and receives texts through Twilio by default. It needs your Twilio Account SID and Auth Token, plus a number or a Messaging Service. This article covers the first two.

Before you start

  • A Twilio account (twilio.com/try-twilio).
  • Admin access to WordPress.

Steps

  1. Sign in to the Twilio Console (twilio.com/console). Twilio’s own code comments say your Account SID can be found there.
  2. Find the Account SID. It starts with AC. (Twilio’s documentation pages I read do not say which box on the Console home page shows it, so look for the label “Account SID”. Not verified.)
  3. Find the Auth Token next to it. It is hidden until you reveal it. (Exact button wording not verified. Twilio’s docs also point to Settings → Account settings → API keys & auth tokens, which is the page they use for API keys.)
  4. In WordPress, go to Settings → VisionScaper. Scroll to Text messages (Twilio).
  5. Paste the SID into Twilio Account SID. VisionScaper removes any character that is not a letter or number.
  6. Paste the token into Twilio Auth Token. It is a hidden field; VisionScaper keeps what you saved if you leave it blank next time.
  7. Fill Twilio phone number or Messaging Service SID (optional) (see the next two articles).
  8. Save.

What the fields do

Field What it does
Twilio Account SID Says which Twilio account to use. Starts with AC.
Twilio Auth Token Lets VisionScaper send texts and check that incoming webhooks are really from Twilio.
Twilio phone number The number texts come from, like +18605550100. Not needed with a Messaging Service.
Messaging Service SID (optional) Starts with MG. Uses a Messaging Service as the sender.

Tips

  • Twilio says API keys are the preferred way to sign in for new software, and an auth token is only for places that ask for it. VisionScaper’s field is named “Auth Token”, so use the token. Whether it accepts an API key is not verified in code.
  • Treat the token like a password. Anyone with it can send texts at your cost.
  • If you change the Auth Token in Twilio, update VisionScaper the same day.

If something goes wrong

  • Texts fail with an authentication error. The SID or token was copied wrong, or the token was changed in Twilio.
  • A new text says it was blocked. US carriers block texts until A2P 10DLC registration is approved (see “Register for A2P 10DLC on Twilio”).
  • Incoming webhook rejected. VisionScaper checks Twilio’s signature with the same token. A wrong token breaks incoming texts.
