Google sign-in for customers

Let customers sign in with Google by creating an OAuth client and pasting the Client ID and secret, using the redirect address VisionScaper shows.

Customers can sign in with Google instead of making a password. Accounts are normal WordPress Subscriber accounts.

Before you start

  • A Google Cloud project.
  • Your site on https://.
  • A privacy policy page address.

Steps

  1. Open Settings → VisionScaper in WordPress admin and scroll to Sign in with Google. Keep this tab open.
  2. In Google Cloud, go to APIs & Services → Credentials. Follow Google’s current instructions.
  3. Set up the OAuth consent screen: choose External, add your app name, your email and your privacy policy address, then publish the app.
  4. Create credentials: OAuth client ID → Web application.
  5. Under Authorized redirect URIs, add the address shown in the VisionScaper numbered list. It looks like your home address followed by ?dreamscaper_oauth=google. Copy it exactly from the screen.
  6. Copy the Client ID and Client secret from Google.
  7. Paste them into Google Client ID and Google Client secret.
  8. Press Save Changes.
  9. Visit your Designer page signed out. A Google sign-in button appears once both boxes are filled.

What VisionScaper asks Google for

The scopes are openid email profile. Google must report the email as verified, or the sign-in is refused.

Tips

  • The redirect address must match exactly, including https and any www.
  • Changing your site address means updating the redirect address in Google.
  • Staff accounts must use a password. Staff who try Google sign-in are told to use a password.
  • A customer who has two-step sign-in on is turned away from social sign-in and told to use password plus code. See Security: two-step sign-in.

If something goes wrong

  • “That sign-in option isn’t set up yet.” One of the two boxes is empty.
  • “That sign-in link expired. Please try again.” The sign-in link only lasts 15 minutes.
  • “We couldn’t finish signing you in.” The secret is wrong or the redirect address does not match.
  • “Sign-in was cancelled.” The customer closed the Google window.
  • Google warns the app is not verified: publish the consent screen and follow Google’s current verification steps.
