Send postcards with tracked QR codes

Pick who gets a postcard, choose a seasonal design, approve the cost, and watch QR scans and delivery.

Grow → Postcards sends a printed postcard to a list of your customers. Nothing is ordered until you approve a stated total, and then it waits out a cancel window.

Before you start

You need your own account with the print-and-mail company. VisionScaper speaks the Lob service. The company bills your account directly, and the account needs money in it. Follow the company’s current instructions to sign up. The code notes that live printing was not tested, so start with a test key.

Set up once

  1. Open Postcards → Settings.
  2. Under Return address, fill in Name, Street, City, State (2 letters) and ZIP. It prints on the back and is required before you approve.
  3. Under Your print-and-mail account, paste your API key and the Security key from the print company. They are stored scrambled and never shown again. A key starting with test_ shows a Test mode banner and nothing is printed or mailed.
  4. Copy the address shown and add it under “automatic updates” on your print company’s website, so VisionScaper can see where each card is.
  5. Under Price and budget, set Price per card ($) to what the company charges you. The default is a placeholder, not approved. Also set Your margin (%), Most for one order ($), Most per month ($) and Cancel window (minutes).
  6. Optionally set Default QR code destination. Empty sends people to your website’s home page.
  7. Click Save settings.

Make a postcard order

  1. Open New postcards.
  2. 1. Who gets a card. Pick customer groups (such as current or past customers, or people who asked for a quote), Only these towns and Last job at least this many days ago. A line shows the estimate: “N × price (placeholder price)”. It also shows who is skipped and why.
  3. 2. The card. Choose Spring cleanup, Summer lawn care or Fall cleanup. Edit the headline, line under it, three or four short points, an offer (only what you want to promise) and the call to action. You can use {first_name}, {business}, {phone} and {town}. Tick Put a QR code on the back (each card has its own, so you can see scans). Set Where the QR code goes. Click Refresh the preview to see the front and back.
  4. 3. Cost and approval. Click Continue to cost and approval. Read the exact total, then click Approve and start the cancel window.
  5. During the cancel window (default 60 minutes), you can click Cancel this order. After it, the cards go to the printer.

Who is left out

Customers on your Do not mail list, customers marked do-not-contact in Marketing, sample customers, incomplete or invalid addresses, and a second card to the same address. Postcards do not need text or email consent. A card that comes back undeliverable adds its customer to the skip list as “Mail came back”. Fix the address, then send just that card again.

Track orders

Orders shows each order’s status: Draft – not ordered, Approved – waiting out the cancel window, Sending, Sent to the printer, Finished, Cancelled, Stopped – needs attention. Each card shows Waiting, With the printer, Mailed, On its way, Delivered, Came back or Failed, plus its scans.

How the QR code works

Each card has its own short link of the form yoursite/?dsq=code. A scan is counted, then the visitor goes to your landing page. Codes are encoded on the server for up to 213 characters of link.

Tips

  • The total is an estimate. The print company bills you directly.
  • Use the same QR link idea on review cards. See “Ask customers for reviews”.

If something goes wrong

  • Approve is blocked: an order over Most for one order, or over Most per month, can’t be approved.
  • Status never updates: the automatic-updates address or security key is missing.
