Settings: Costs & markups

Enter your labor cost, overhead, markups or target margin, sales tax, deposit and quote expiry so quotes price correctly.

Path: Settings → Prices and quotes → Costs & markups. These numbers turn quantities into your true cost and then into the customer’s price.

Warning: The starting values in this tab come with the software and are placeholders, not approved. Replace every number with your own before you send quotes. Ask your accountant about tax.

Your costs

Field Meaning
Labor cost per hour ($) Burdened: wage plus payroll taxes, workers’ comp and insurance, per crew-member hour.
Overhead (%) Trucks, office, insurance. Added to direct cost to get true cost.
Minimum job ($) Smallest price you will quote.
Mobilization per job ($) Charge for getting to a job.

Your price to the customer

  • Pricing method: choose Markup by category or Target gross margin.
  • With markup, enter a markup percent for each cost type: Materials, Labor, Equipment, Subcontractors, Disposal, Delivery, Other.
  • With margin, enter Target gross margin (%). The page notes a 50% markup equals a 33% margin.
  • Sales tax (%): your state’s rate.
  • Tax applies to: Whole job, Materials only, or No sales tax.
  • Deposit when signed (%)
  • Round section prices up to ($)
  • Quotes are good for (days)
  • On proposals show: Price for each section, or Total only.

Steps

  1. Open Costs & markups.
  2. Work out your true labor cost per hour and enter it.
  3. Enter overhead and minimum job.
  4. Pick markup or margin and fill the matching boxes.
  5. Enter tax, deposit, rounding and validity.
  6. Click Save costs & markups.

Tips

  • Do a test quote after saving to see the effect. The Get started guide has a step for it.
  • The deposit here also feeds the default payment schedule. See [settings-terms-payments-and-follow-ups].
  • Search for “markup” or “margin” to land here fast.

If something goes wrong

  • Prices look too high or low. Re-check the pricing method and the percent boxes. A margin and a markup are not the same.
  • Tax is wrong on a quote. Check “Tax applies to”.
