Measure something to set the scale exactly

Tap the bottom and top of a door, garage door, fence, car or person and enter its real height for a more exact scale.

If “Set it up for me” is close but not exact, measure something in the photo whose real height you know. This is in Photo setup → Scale, in the section Measure something yourself (more exact).

Steps

  1. Open the Scale tab and expand Measure something yourself (more exact).
  2. Under Tell me how big things are, pick What is it? from the list: Front door, Garage door (7 ft), Garage door (8 ft), Privacy fence (6 ft), Car, Person, or Something else.
  3. Under How tall is it?, type the real height in feet and inches, or drag the end of the tape measure. The two stay in sync. Doors and garage doors vary, so use the real height if you know it.
  4. Tap Tap its bottom and top.
  5. On the photo, tap the very bottom of the object (where it meets the ground), then the very top.
  6. The object appears in the list with its height. A status chip shows Scale: good, Scale: okay or Scale: check it.

If you chose Something else, type what you are measuring (for example mailbox, gate, ladder) first.

With a signed-in account you can also tap ✨ Find it for me for a door, garage door, car or person. A dashed box appears for you to confirm with Yes, use it or No.

How it works

  • One measured object sets the camera height.
  • Two measured objects, one near and one far, also set the eye-level line.
  • Moving the blue eye-level line afterward keeps your measured things the right size.

Rules the Designer applies

  • The thing must be at least about 2 ft tall. Smaller things, such as a cobblestone, cannot set the scale.
  • An object must be tall enough in the picture to count.
  • A measurement that does not fit the others is refused or ignored with a reason. Your earlier scale is kept.
  • The camera height is kept to a believable range.
  • Each item in the list has a Remove button.

Tips

  • Pick something upright and fully visible.
  • Use one near and one far object for the best result.

If something goes wrong

  • “The bottom of it is above the blue eye-level line”: tap its bottom again where it meets the ground, or drag the blue line up first.
  • “That is too small in the photo to measure well”: measure something taller.
  • “None of your measurements could be used”: measure something upright and at least 2 ft tall, then tap its bottom and its very top.
  • Aerial views do not use this; they have a “Pixels per foot” slider.
