Consent and opt-outs
How consent, STOP, START, HELP and unsubscribes work, and why a stop on one channel is honored on all.
This is not legal advice. VisionScaper gives you tools and safe defaults, and you decide what is right for your business.
What needs consent
- Marketing texts (offers, seasonal reminders) need each customer’s written OK: a signed form, your sign-up page, or texting YES.
- Messages about their own request, estimate or job do not need that.
- Emails can go to your customers until they unsubscribe. A setting can require email consent too (see “Marketing safety checks and sending limits”).
Words customers can text
| Customer texts | What happens |
|---|---|
| STOP, STOPALL, UNSUBSCRIBE, CANCEL, END, QUIT, OPTOUT, REVOKE | Marked do-not-contact. They get “You’re opted out. You won’t get more messages from us. Reply START to join again.” |
| START, UNSTOP, SUBSCRIBE | Back on the list |
| HELP, INFO | Your business name, phone and “Reply STOP to opt out” |
| YES, Y, JOIN | Counts as agreeing, when you asked |
| Plain sentences like “stop texting me” or “remove me” | Treated as an opt-out |
What an opt-out does
- Waiting marketing messages are cancelled.
- Active automations for them stop.
- Calls from the AI Receptionist stop too. One do-not-contact list is shared by messaging and the Receptionist.
- A stop on any channel is honored on all of them. The opt-out is written to your record.
- An email unsubscribe ends email. A text STOP ends all marketing.
Where to see it
Marketing → 👥 Consent shows each customer with chips such as ✅ texts OK, 🚫 STOP, 📭 Unsubscribed and ⚠️ Bounced. Filter by these. Proof of consent shows the wording, date and who recorded it.
Get permission to text
On the Consent tab, 📲 Get permission to text shows a sign-up link. Click 📋 Copy and put it on your website, invoices and group posts. To ask existing customers, tick those with no text consent and click 💬 Ask selected by text. Each person gets one text asking if they want seasonal reminders and offers (reply YES). Each person is only asked once.
Do not contact
In a conversation, click Do not contact… and Stop all messages to them. You can add a note.
Tips
- Never use a purchased or borrowed list. VisionScaper refuses it.
- Keep proof. It is your protection if anyone asks.
If something goes wrong
- A customer says they never agreed: open Proof of consent and read the record.
- A customer was put back by mistake: use the do-not-contact sheet. Taking someone off the list asks you to confirm that they asked you to.
